Bwindi Impenetrable National Park

Trekkers in Mgahinga often enjoy quieter trails and fewer crowds, making the encounter with gorillas even more intimate.

Preparation and Trekking Experience

Gorilla trekking requires moderate physical fitness, as trails can be steep, muddy, and uneven. Most treks last 2 to 6 hours, depending on the location of the gorilla family. Visitors are advised to wear sturdy hiking boots, long-sleeved clothing to protect against insects and vegetation, and bring rain gear due to Uganda’s unpredictable weather. Trekking sticks, water, and snacks are also recommended.

The trekking experience is designed to be both safe and sustainable. Only one gorilla group is visited per day per group of trekkers, and the number of visitors is strictly controlled. This ensures minimal human impact on gorilla behavior and habitat.

Revenue from gorilla permits supports park management, anti-poaching patrols, and community development programs. The best time for gorilla trekking in Uganda is during the dry seasons, from June to September and December to February. Trails are more accessible, and the weather is generally favorable. However, gorilla trekking is possible year-round, with each season offering unique experiences, from lush green landscapes in the rainy months to easier walking conditions in the dry periods.
