Mgahinga Gorilla National Park is one of Uganda’s smallest yet most enchanting national parks, covering approximately 33.7 square kilometers in the southwestern part of the country. Nestled in the Virunga Mountains near the borders of Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo, Mgahinga forms part of the larger Virunga Conservation Area. Geography and Landscape
Mgahinga is dominated by the Virunga volcanic range, comprising three main volcanoes: Mount Sabinyo, Mount Gahinga, and Mount Muhabura. Dense tropical forests, bamboo groves, and swamps cover much of the park, offering a sanctuary for numerous plant and animal species. The park’s elevation ranges from about 2,227 to 4,127 meters, providing a cool and refreshing climate that contrasts sharply with Uganda’s lowland savannas.
The park’s volcanic soils support diverse flora, including montane forests, bamboo thickets, and heath vegetation. Its unique terrain makes it an ideal habitat for rare primates, birds, and other wildlife, while also offering adventurous trekking and panoramic views for visitors.
Wildlife and Biodiversity
Mgahinga Gorilla National Park is best known for its population of mountain gorillas, one of the world’s most endangered species.
