Chimpanzee Tracking. Uganda is famous for its mountain gorillas, but it is also one of the best places in the world to see chimpanzees in the wild. These intelligent primates share about 98–99% of our DNA, making encounters with them both thrilling and deeply moving. Chimpanzee tracking is one of the top safari experiences in Uganda, offering visitors the chance to explore lush tropical forests while observing our closest relatives in their natural habitat.
Where to Go Chimpanzee Tracking in Uganda
Uganda is home to over 5,000 chimpanzees, spread across several forests and reserves. The main destinations for tracking are:
1. Kibale Forest National Park
Known as the “Primate Capital of the World”, Kibale Forest has the highest density of primates in Africa, with 13 different species. It is the premier destination for chimpanzee tracking, with a very high success rate (over 90%) of sightings. Visitors can track chimpanzees on morning or afternoon treks, and there is also a special Chimpanzee Habituation Experience (CHEX) that allows more time with them.
2. Budongo Forest Reserve
Located in Murchison Falls National Park, Budongo is Uganda’s largest natural forest. It offers chimp tracking experiences in the Kaniyo Pabidi section, with a rich diversity of birdlife and other primates. Budongo is less crowded than Kibale, making it a great option for travelers seeking a quieter experience.
3. Kyambura Gorge
Often called the “Valley of the Apes”, Kyambura Gorge is a dramatic forested ravine within Queen Elizabeth National Park. Though sightings are less guaranteed compared to Kibale, tracking here is spectacular thanks to the stunning landscapes and the thrill of searching for a small, isolated community of chimps.
4. Kalinzu Forest Reserve
Near Queen Elizabeth National Park, Kalinzu Forest is another excellent site for chimpanzee tracking. It has a large habituated community and offers more affordable permits compared to Kibale, making it popular among budget-conscious travelers.
What to Expect on a Tracking Day
A chimpanzee tracking experience usually begins early in the morning with a briefing by Uganda Wildlife Authority rangers or guides. You’ll be told about the forest, the rules, and what to expect. Tracking typically takes 2–4 hours, depending on where the chimps are on that day. Once found, visitors are allowed to spend one hour observing the chimpanzees.
During your trek, you’ll walk through dense forests, listening to the calls of birds and monkeys until you hear the loud pant-hoots, screams, and drumming that signal a chimpanzee group nearby. Watching chimps is fascinating—some will be grooming each other, mothers will care for their infants, while others may be feeding, playing, or displaying their strength by drumming tree trunks.
Chimpanzee Habituation Experience (CHEX)
For those who want more than just an hour, Kibale offers the Chimpanzee Habituation Experience. This unique activity allows visitors to join researchers and spend up to four hours with chimps that are being habituated to human presence. It’s a more immersive, in-depth experience, giving you insights into chimpanzee behavior, research, and conservation.
Permits and Prices
Chimpanzee tracking permits are required for all sites and are issued by the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA). Prices vary depending on the location:
- Kibale Forest National Park: USD 250 per person (tracking), USD 300–350 for Habituation Experience
- Budongo Forest: About USD 120 per person
- Kyambura Gorge: About USD 100 per person
- Kalinzu Forest: About USD 130 per person
Permits should be booked in advance, especially for Kibale, as demand is high.
Rules and Guidelines
To protect both visitors and the chimpanzees, there are strict rules in place:
- Minimum age for tracking is 12 years
- Maximum group size is usually 6–8 people
- Visitors are allowed one hour with chimpanzees (except in habituation)
- Keep a distance of at least 7 meters
- Do not track if you are sick (chimps are highly susceptible to human diseases)
- No eating, drinking, or flash photography near chimps
- Always follow your guide’s instructions
What to Pack
- Comfortable hiking boots with good grip
- Long trousers and long-sleeved shirts (protection against stinging plants and insects)
- Rain jacket (showers are common in tropical forests)
- Drinking water and energy snacks
- Binoculars for bird and monkey spotting
- Camera (no flash)
- Insect repellent
When to Go
Chimpanzee tracking is possible all year round, but the dry seasons (December–February and June–September) offer easier hiking conditions and better visibility. The wet seasons make trekking more challenging, but the forests are greener and chimpanzees can be easier to find since food is abundant.
Other Wildlife Encounters
While on chimpanzee treks, you’ll often see other primates and forest creatures. In Kibale, for example, you might encounter red colobus monkeys, black-and-white colobus monkeys, blue monkeys, L’Hoest’s monkeys, and many bird species. The forests are biodiversity hotspots, making the experience even richer.
