Gorilla trekking in the Buhoma sector of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is one of Uganda’s most iconic wildlife experiences. Gorilla Families in Buhoma

Buhoma is home to several habituated gorilla families, each offering a unique experience. Notable families include Mubare, the first to be habituated in Bwindi, known for its history and gentle members; Habinyanja, famous for its large group and dynamic interactions; Rushegura, noted for its calm nature; Bitukura, a relatively new family with playful gorillas; and Kahungye, located in the southern part of Bwindi and accessible from Buhoma. Visitors are assigned to a gorilla family based on availability and fitness level, ensuring a safe and rewarding experience.

Trekking Experience

The trek typically begins early in the morning with a briefing at the park headquarters. Experienced guides lead trekkers through the dense montane forest, which can include steep and muddy paths. The duration of the trek varies, ranging from two to six hours depending on the location of the gorilla family. Once located, visitors spend one hour observing the gorillas, witnessing their social behavior, playing, feeding, and interacting with their young. It is an intimate and unforgettable encounter with one of nature’s most intelligent species.

Accessibility

Buhoma is considered the most accessible sector of Bwindi. By road, it takes about 8–9 hours from Kampala or Entebbe, approximately 3 hours from Queen Elizabeth National Park, or 3–4 hours from Kigali via the Cyanika border. Air travel is also an option, with flights from Entebbe or Kajjansi to Kihihi airstrip, followed by a short drive to Buhoma. This accessibility makes it convenient for travelers coming from various parts of Uganda or neighboring countries.

Accommodation Options

Buhoma offers a variety of accommodations to suit different budgets. Luxury lodges such as Buhoma Lodge and Gorilla Forest Camp provide top-notch amenities and comfort. Mid-range options like Silverback Lodge and Engagi Lodge offer cozy stays with good access to trekking points. Budget-conscious travelers can stay at Buhoma Community Rest Camp, which provides simple yet comfortable facilities. Many lodges are within walking distance of the park headquarters, making early morning treks more manageable.

Best Time to Visit

The dry seasons, from June to September and December to February, are ideal for trekking. Trails are less muddy, and wildlife is more visible and active. However, trekking is possible year-round, and the forest during the rainy months is lush and green, offering a different, yet equally beautiful, trekking experience.

Tips for a Successful Trek

Visitors should have moderate fitness levels, as trekking can be physically demanding. Recommended gear includes sturdy hiking boots, long-sleeved clothing, and a rain jacket. Gorilla trekking permits should be booked well in advance, as they are limited and often sell out quickly. While observing gorillas, maintaining a safe distance of at least 7 meters, avoiding sudden movements, and following the guide’s instructions are essential for safety and minimal disturbance to the animals.
